<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording paper roll supporting device having simplified construction and advantageously improved user-friendliness, and also to provide a printer. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The first recording paper roll supporting device 14 is provided with a first member 30, and a second member 32. The first member 30 has: an insertion part 36 to be inserted into a center hole 4 in the end of a recording paper roll 2; a supporting part 38 provided at the end of the insertion part 36; and a supporting shaft part 40 provided at the end of the supporting part 38. The supporting part 38 has an insertion part side cam face 50. The insertion part side cam face 50 has three cam faces, namely, a first cam face 50A, a second cam face 50B and a third cam face 50C, facing an outer peripheral face 48, and having axial heights mutually different and phases shifted in the peripheral direction. The second member 32 has a flange part 60 and a cam follower part 62. The cam follower part 62 is provided to be selectively engaged with each of the plurality of insertion part side cam faces 50.
