The method involves operating an electrical device in two operating modes e.g. standby mode and usage mode, where switching from one of the operating modes into the other operating mode is enabled based on input of preset security information e.g. password or identification information of a user. The device is connected to a data bus (3), where the device receives information packets (6), which are sent over the data bus, in the latter operating mode. The device is switched into the former operating mode when the received information packet contains another preset security information. An independent claim is also included for an electrical device comprising a switching device.
