The method involves a temporarily adjusting a correction current of a coil and reducing to zero for adjusting a desired residual magnetic induction of a housing (16) and a field producing component (18). A powerless operative connection is made between a fastening element (12), the housing and the component (18), and another fastening element (14) and a pot lamella (26). A reference value is determined depending on the operating point from a table. The correction current is determined from another table based on the determined reference value and a target value. An independent claim is also included for an arresting system with a magnetorheological holding device for a door or a flap.
