PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine an index indicating the mechanical characteristics of a material by cutting it. SOLUTION: A cutting drag horizontal component Fh and the cutting drag vertical component Fv during sample cutting are measured, and based on these components, at least one of the shear angleϕ, shear stressτs, and sheared surface vertical stressσs is computed. Since the sheer angleϕ, cutting stressτs, or cutting surface vertical stressσs depends on the mechanical property of the material but does not depend on the cutting width b or cutting depth d, such a value can be suitably used as an index indicating the mechanical characteristics of the material.
