The system has an output unit activated during an approximation of a motor vehicle to a zebra crossing and outputting warning depending on a vehicle speed. A zebra crossing is identified by a camera system for environment detection in the vehicle. A road sign detection function is provided to detect a traffic character, which is indicated on the zebra crossing. An electronic map contains a position of the zebra crossing. The speed of the vehicle is reduced automatically, if the speed lie above a given threshold value during approximation at the zebra crossing.
