<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display having height front contrast, and the omnidirectionaly excellent visibility. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display includes: a liquid crystal cell 10 having a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between a pair of transparent substrates with electrodes; a first polarization plate 21 disposed on the viewing side of the liquid crystal cell; a first anisotropic optical element 31 disposed between the liquid crystal cell and the first polarization plate; and a second anisotropic optical element 41 disposed between the first anisotropic optical element and the liquid crystal cell. If the first anisotropic optical element 31 has an in-plane refractive index nx<SB>1</SB>in a phase delay axis, an in-plane refractive index ny<SB>1</SB>in an phase advance axis, and a refractive index nz<SB>1</SB>in the thickness direction, it satisfies nx<SB>1</SB>≥ny<SB>1</SB>>nz. The second anisotropic optical element 41 is formed of a liquid crystalline material, and has a portion in which an orientation direction of the liquid crystalline material is continuously varied in the thickness direction of the anisotropic optical elements. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT |
