822,272. Joining ceramic articles. CORNING GLASS WORKS. Jan. 23, 1957 [Feb. 1, 1956], No. 2484/57. Drawings to Specification. Class 87(1) [Also in Groups XXIII and XXXVI] Preformed ceramic parts are joined together by sealing glass which is subsequently devitrified. The sealing glass should be a soft glass, and when used for joining glass parts, e.g. the panel and funnel of a cathode ray tube, should have a softening temperature at least 40‹C. below the sealing temperature and preferably below the annealing temperature of the glass parts. It may be applied to the parts to be joined by powdering and mixing with a binder to form a suspension, coating the parts and subsequently heating. After formation of a seal by heating the assembly to a predetermined temperature the sealing glass is devitrified by heating it for a further period either at the sealing temperature or a higher temperature, depending on the type of glass, until at least part of the glass is converted to a crystalline phase. The method is described in detail for several types of joint; compositions of suitable lead-zinc-borate sealing glasses are given together with information on the use of stress evaluations from birefringence measurements for the selection of suitable glasses and temperatures. Specifications 613,896 and 629,049 [both in Group XXIII] are referred to.
