PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a direct injection type internal combustion engine, improved in work efficiency and reduced in amount of NOx exhaust. SOLUTION: A sub-combustion chamber R2 is provided in the interior of a piston 20, and an opening part S1 to the main combustion chamber R1 side of a connection port S connecting the main combustion chamber R1 and the sub-combustion chamber R2 is opened facing to the passage of the fuel flow so that the fuel flowing from a fuel injection valve 40 toward an ignition plug 50 is introduced into the sub-combustion chamber R2. The connection port S is provided in two places so that the direction pointing from the sub-combustion chamber R2 to the main combustion chamber R1 is turned to the outer peripheral direction of a substantially circular piston cavity 21. Further, the connecting ports S are provided substantially parallel to the base of the piston cavity 21 (substantially vertical to the reciprocating direction of the piston 20).
