PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide technology for preventing generation of knocking and pre-ignition in an internal combustion engine when a compression ratio is changed in the variable compression ratio internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: The variable compression ratio internal combustion engine is provided with: a gasoline adjustment valve and an alcohol adjustment valve for changing a concentration of alcohol in a fuel capable of containing the alcohol; and a compression ratio variable mechanism for changing the compression ratio of the internal combustion engine. When the compression ratio of the internal combustion engine is changed from a low compression ratio to a high compression ratio using the compression ratio variable mechanism (S101-Yes), before changing the compression ratio, safe control is performed and the concentration of alcohol in the fuel is varied to a higher concentration than the required concentration of alcohol required after changing the compression ratio using the gasoline adjustment valve and the alcohol adjustment valve (S102), and after changing the compression ratio, it is reset to normal control and the concentration of alcohol in the fuel is changed to the required concentration of alcohol using the gasoline adjustment valve and the alcohol adjustment valve (S105).
