PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To guarantee predetermined sealing performance while securing predetermined sliding performance as well as allow suitable use for a hydraulic cylinder or a hydraulic shock absorber without an increase in component cost. SOLUTION: This seal ring comprises a main ring 3 housed in a special groove 2a formed in the outer periphery of a partition member 2 which partitions a cylinder portion 1 into a high pressure side oil chamber R1 and a low pressure side oil chamber R2, in such a manner as to be movable to the axial direction of the cylinder portion 1, and having an outer periphery put in slide contact with the inner periphery of the cylinder portion 1 and an inner periphery parted from an inner bottom 2b of the special groove 2a to form a flow path 3b between the inner bottom and itself, and a cover ring 4 similarly housed in the special groove 2a in such a manner as to be movable to the moving direction of the main ring 3 and superposed on the main ring 3 for shielding an abutment joint 3a of the main ring 3 in the state of parting the outer periphery from the inner periphery of the cylinder portion 1.
