<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reliably obtain desired varistor characteristics while keeping favorable heat dissipation. <P>SOLUTION: In a varistor V1, a composite part 5 formed of a composite material of ZnO and Ag while having good heat dissipation is disposed from the main face 2a of the varistor element 2 till its main face 2b. Accordingly, heat transferred from a semiconductor light emitting device 11 to a varistor part 4 through external electrodes 3, 3 can be promptly transferred to the main face 2b side through the composite part 5. In the varistor V1, side faces 6b-6f, 7b-7f excluding the inside face 6a and the inside face 7a are brought into an exposed state on the side faces 2c-2f.
