PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively prevent the temperature rise of an exit side polarizer by restraining heat generation itself in the exit side polarizer and also to provide a projector easily realizing high luminance. SOLUTION: The projector is equipped with an illuminator 100, liquid crystal display devices 400R, 400G and 400B modulating illuminating luminous flux from the illuminator in accordance with image information, and a projection optical system 600 projecting the luminous flux modulated by the liquid crystal display devices. The respective exit side polarizers in the liquid crystal display devices are polarization beam splitters 430 (430R, 430G and 430B) having structure obtained by interposing an XY type polarizing film 436 having XY type polarizing characteristic by laminating a plurality of films having biaxial directivity between two glass prisms 432 and 434, and set so that an angle formed by a light incident surface with the XY type polarizing film may be within 20°to 40°.
