PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an extremely simple system capable of preventing bubbles from being generated in a leaked recording liquid even when the negative pressure of a recording head is destroyed and the recording liquid or the like in the recording head leaks into a nozzle protective member and is stored there, and preventing the quality of an image from being deteriorated such as nozzle omission and ink leakage. SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus is equipped with one or a plurality of recording head units having a subtank which feeds a recording liquid to the recording head delivering liquid droplets of the recording liquid from the nozzle and is supplemented and fed with the recording liquid from a main tank on an apparatus body side, and a negative pressure lever displaced in accordance with the amount of the recording liquid stored in the subtank and provided in the subtank. A maintaining recovering method for maintaining and recovering the performance of the recording head is characterized by controlling a speed for removing a cap member from a nozzle face from a condition that the nozzle face of the recording head is covered by the cap member at a specified speed or lower.
