<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To limit to a proper range the vibration amplitude of a vibration damping device which suppresses vibration using the resonance of auxiliary mass at a certain frequency. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The vibration damping device includes: an actuator 13, which gives a reaction force to a vibration control object by vibrating the auxiliary mass supported by the vibration control object via a spring element; and a control section, which damps the vibration of the vibration control object by controlling the amplitude and frequency of a driving current supplied to the actuator. A current upper limit table 23, which restricts the amplitude of the driving current supplied to the actuator, is provided on this damping device. The current upper limit table defines the upper limit of the amplitude of a current command value in advance based on frequency characteristics of a transmission function that shows the relation of the current command value that controls the driving current to the acceleration of the auxiliary mass and the permissible maximum displacement of the auxiliary mass.
