<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a character recognizing device for selecting a recognition candidate from dictionary characters at a high speed with hardware without requiring complicated determination processing and without requiring rearrangement processing of data. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A means for selecting P recognition candidates in the ascending order of distance from a dictionary includes a first memory for storing a calculated distance corresponding to the number of characters of the dictionary, a second memory for storing as many flags as the number of characters of the dictionary that identify whether each distance is the distance of the selected recognition candidates, a means for reading the distance from the first memory and reading the flag corresponding to the distance from the second memory, a means for identifying the flag, a means for detecting the minimum value of the read distance, and a means for rewriting the flag of the second memory. The means for selecting P recognition candidates identifies the flag, detects the minimum value of the distance of non-selected recognition candidates and outputs the memory address of the distance, and repeats, P times, the rewriting processing of the flag corresponding to the distance into the selected state and outputs P memory addresses and their distances as recognition candidates.
