A liquid-coupled antenna comprises a hermetically sealed container 21 filled with a polar liquid 22. A radio frequency radiator 25 is also located within the container 21 and is electrically insulated from the said liquid 22 by insulating material 27. Signal transmission means 23 is connected to the radiator 25 and a grounding part 24 is connected to the liquid 22. The polar liquid 22 may be at least one selected from the group consisting of water, methanol, ethanol, butanol, acetonitrile, acetone, a SAR solution and an electrolyte. The polar liquid 22 may also contain a conductive powder, an ethylene glycol-based anti-freeze liquid and/or a corrosion inhibitor such as nitrite, triethanolamine or mixtures thereof. The radiator 25 may be a monopole, dipole, helical or chip-type structure. The liquid-coupled antenna is intended to provide high gain, broadband and/or improved low frequency performance for a compact antenna structure which may be readily used in mobile hand-held devices.
|
