PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bill identification device loaded in an automatic vending machine, a money changer or the like, detecting a bill inserted from a bill insertion port by a photosensor provided inside a bill passage, and carrying the bill into the device in response to the detection. SOLUTION: This bill identification device includes: an inserted bill detection sensor means disposed along the bill passage connected to the bill insertion port, detecting the bill inserted from the bill insertion port by light; a shielding means provided upstream of a bill insertion detection sensor means of the bill passage, shutting off the bill passage to shield disturbance light entering from the bill insertion port; an energizing means imparting external force to the shielding means to energize the shielding means to a direction to shut off the bill passage; and a drive means imparting, to the shielding means, external force acting to a direction opposite to the external force imparted to the shielding means by the energizing means to open the bill passage.
