PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reaction method which allows elevated hydrogenation reaction temperature resulting in substantially shortened reaction time and which allows setting a low used amount of a catalyst, in obtaining a β-pinene-based polymer by converting unsaturated bonds contained in a polymer containing β-pinene as its constitutional unit into saturated bonds by a hydrogenation reaction. SOLUTION: A method of hydrogenating a β-pinene-based polymer is provided, which in a hydrogenation reaction obtaining the β-pinene-based polymer by converting unsaturated bonds present in main chains and/or side chains of a polymer containing 30 mass% or more of a β-pinene unit into saturated bonds, comprises using a metal-supported hydrogenating catalyst and making it coexistent with at least one basic compound selected from, specified, organic alkali metals, organic alkaline earth metals, amines, and pyridines.
