PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply produce the filament of a metal titanate (wherein, barium titanate is a representative example) having an extremely large specific surface area. SOLUTION: In a method for producing the metal titanate by reacting a titanium salt with a water-soluble metal salt in water, the titanium salt is a long filamentous titanium oxide, the concentration of the water-soluble metal salt is 0.01-1 mol/L and a long filamentous metal titanate is produced by performing a reaction in a settled state. In the metal titanate where an ultrafine filamentous structure is provided by performing a hydrothermal synthesis of the water-soluble metal salt (barium hydroxide and the like) and the titanium salt (the long filamentous titanium oxide) in the settled state while suppressing in a specified low concentration, the extremely large specific surface area (100-1,000 m<SP>2</SP>/g) can be assured.
