<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas cooling apparatus and a gas cooling method capable of efficiently cooling a workpiece or the like by using a blower of a small capacity without increasing the flow rate of introduced gas. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The gas cooling apparatus 1 comprises a cylindrical cooler 10, a gas introducing passage 20 provided on the upper side of the cooler 10, and a gas discharging passage 30 provided on the lower side of the cooler 10. The introducing passage 20 and the gas discharging passage 30 are projected and opened in the same direction from the cooler 10, and the direction is the tangential direction of the outer circumference of the cooler 10. Further, a workpiece 40 is arranged at the center inside the cooler 10 during the cooling. When the workpiece 40 is cooled by using the gas cooling apparatus 1, the flow rate of cooling gas in the cooler 10 is substantially same as the flow rate of cooling gas to be introduced, therefore the workpiece 40 can be efficiently cooled.
