摘要 A polarization conversion element and a method for manufacturing the same are provided to prevent detachment of a polarization separation layer on a boundary surface with a glass board and to suppress the generation of cracks. A first transparent member includes a light incident surface, a light output surface parallel to the light incident surface, and a first and second layer forming surfaces having predetermined angles at the light incident surface and the light output surface, a polarization separation layer(10) formed on the first layer forming surface, and a reflective layer formed on the second layer forming surface. Each of a plurality of second transparent members includes a light incident surface and a light output surface formed on the same planes as the planes of the light incident surface and the light output surface of the first transparent member. A polarization conversion member is formed to convert the polarized light arranged in one of a light path for polarized light transmitting the polarization separation layer and a light path for polarized light reflected by the reflective layer. The polarization separation layer includes a first polarization separation layer and a second polarization separation layer. The first polarization separation layer includes a first low refractive index layer(12) formed with a first low refractive index material having compressive stress and a high refractive index layer(11) formed with a high refractive index material. The second polarization separation layer is formed with a second low refractive index layer(13). The second low refractive index layer is formed with a second low refractive index material having tensile stress and the high refractive index layer.
