A method for recognizing denomination of a note by using wavelet transform is provided to perform preprocessing processes such as edge detection or the like on an inputted note image, perform the wavelet transform as much as a predetermined frequency, and identify the note by using a feature vector configured by comparing an absolute value of a wavelet coefficient with a reference value, so that note recognition can be possible even when impurities are attached on the whole or part of the note which will be read. A method for recognizing denomination of a note by using wavelet transform comprises: performing a preprocessing process such as edge detection or the like on an original image generated by scanning the note(S310,S320); performing wavelet transform of the preprocessed original image as much as a predetermined frequency(S330); calculating a wavelet coefficient on each sub band generated by the wavelet transform, and dividing each of the sub band into length m and width n as the predetermined frequency(S340,S350); respectively extracting the number of wavelet coefficients larger than or equal to a reference value by comparing an absolute value size of the wavelet coefficients with the reference value according to cells divided into the length m and width n(S360); configuring a feature vector of a vertical structure after the above step(S370); applying normal analysis to the feature vector in order to increase discrimination ability and reduce the size of the feature vector(S380); and recognizing the denomination of the note by measuring similarity between the feature vector and a vector of a pre-designated criterion(S390,S400).
