<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus for surely preventing an illumination device from being projected even in the case where a reading optical system with an inclined optical axis is used. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An image reading apparatus comprises: cover glass 7 for supporting a document; an illumination device 10 for illuminating the document via the cover glass 7; a reading optical system 30 for image-forming light from the document via the cover glass 7; and the like. An optical axis A0 of the reading optical system 30 is set obliquely to a normal direction of the cover glass 7, and a light emission plane 5 of the illumination device 10 does not exist between a line A1 obtained by extending the optical axis A0 of the reading optical system 30 in a regular reflection direction with respect to a surface of the cover glass 7 and a line A2 extending in the regular reflection direction from a surface installed within a reading limit distance of the optical system.
