<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for cooling the hot rolling can stabilize a shape of a steel plate at fore and rear ends, and suppress the vibration of the steel plate in a cooling process after the finish rolling of the hot rolling of the steel plate. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the apparatus for cooling the hot rolling which is arranged on the downstream side of a finish rolling mill 2 for the continuous hot rolling and cools a steel plate 3 rolled by the finish rolling mill 2 while the steel plate is conveyed, a pinch roll 10 for straightening the rolling shape is arranged at the position where the surface temperature of the steel plate 3 is ≤800°C, which holds the steel plate 3 while the tension of ≥0.4 kg/mm<SP>2</SP>is applied to the finish rolling mill 2 side. The pinch roll 10 for straightening the rolling shape reduces wavy undulation at a fore end and a tail end of the steel plate 3, enhances the finish rolling accuracy, and executes the uniform cooling.
