<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for designing a tire capable of attaining optimization of a tire cross section shape while taking into consideration the arrangement of an inner member such as a belt. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The design method for the tire includes a curve setting step (step 104) for setting a tire model Tm indicating the tire cross section shape including the inner member and setting at least two free curves of a free curve corresponding to at least one of a tire inner surface and a tire outer surface of the tire model Tm and a free curve corresponding to the inner member; a function setting step (step 112) for setting an object function regarding the tire performance of the tire model; and calculation steps (step 114-124) for determining a control point for giving the optimum value of the object function by changing a control point of at least one free curve of the set free curves.
