PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which determines whether the quality of an image formed on a printing medium is satisfactory, without reading the image formed on the printing medium, and starts a recovery operation at an early stage, when abnormal state of the quality of the image is detected. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus transfers a toner image, formed on a photoreceptor for an image to be printed, onto the printing medium, thereby printing this image. The image forming apparatus includes an image forming means for forming a toner image of an abnormal state detection pattern on a photoreceptor and outside an area where the toner image for the image to be printed is formed, the pattern which is used for detecting an abnormal state of the image; a reading means for reading the abnormal state detection pattern formed by the image forming means; and an abnormal state detecting means for detecting the presence or absence of an abnormal state of the image printed based on the reading result of the reading means.
