PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal printer capable of preventing the disconnection or breakage of a thermal head caused by various abnormal states. SOLUTION: In the thermal printer provided with a thermal head having a plurality of heating elements for heating the heating elements and performing printing on a printing medium based on print data, a temperature detecting means detects the temperature of the thermal head and calculates a temperature rise at each prescribed timing. Then, a specified temperature rise for specifying the temperature rise of the thermal head is obtained from a specified temperature rise storage means. Whether the calculated temperature rise exceeds a specified temperature rise or not is determined, and when the calculated temperature rise is determined to exceed the specified temperature, printing operation is stopped.
