PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new fluorene skeleton-bearing silicon compound having excellent properties including high refractive index, causing no cracking even if a thick film is formed by sol-gel reaction. SOLUTION: The new silicon compound is represented by formula [wherein, ring Z is an aromatic hydrocarbon ring; R<SP>1</SP>is an alkylene group; R<SP>2</SP>is H or methyl; Y is a group -(XR<SP>3</SP>)<SB>p</SB>-SiR<SP>4</SP>R<SP>5</SP>R<SP>6</SP>(wherein, X is a sulfur atom or imino; R<SP>3</SP>is an alkylene group; R<SP>4</SP>, R<SP>5</SP>and R<SP>6</SP>are each H, hydroxy, halogen atom, alkoxy or hydrocarbon group; p is an integer; wherein, at least one of R<SP>4</SP>, R<SP>5</SP>and R<SP>6</SP>is H, hydroxy, halogen atom or group -OR<SP>7</SP>); and m, n1 and n2 are each an integer].
