The system has an exhaust gas channel (2) with two partial-exhaust gas channels (2.1, 2.2), where the channel (2.1) is thermally coupled with a thermo-electric generator (3). Controllable switching elements (4, 4.1, 4.2) e.g. exhaust flaps, are present in the channel (2) to control an exhaust gas stream such that the stream flows exclusively or proportionately through the channels (2.1, 2.2). A control device (6) controls the elements based on a temperature of the generator and/or an exhaust gas pressure prevailing in the system and/or a temperature of an internal-combustion engine (BKM). An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an exhaust gas system for an internal combustion engine.
