The ballast has an output connecting an alternating current-high pressure-gas discharge lamp (GDL) to the ballast. A capacitor (C1) and an inductor (L1) are connected between a connection of a transformer secondary side and a connection of the output. An alternating voltage (V1) produced by an inverter is present at the output to operate the lamp. A current pulse producing unit (I) provides an output voltage during and/or after ignition of the lamp to directly drive a current pulse over the lamp after the ignition, and is arranged parallel to a series circuit of the inductor and the output.
