The method involves determining displacements of a laser scanner (3) of a reflection type on a floor surface in a floor region. A surface profile of the floor surface is determined by the determined displacements. The profile is evaluated for detection of obstacles (5) and/or stain of the scanner. The determined surface profile is compared with a reference profile, and is tested for interruption, where the scanner is arranged at an exterior mirror of a vehicle door (2) of a vehicle (1). Strong stain of the laser scanner is enclosed, when the surface profile is not determined. An independent claim is also included for a device for detecting an obstacle in a base area besides a vehicle door of a vehicle comprising a laser scanner and a control unit.
