The sensor (10) has a monochrome light collector (18) including a pixel-type light collecting element for collecting image data of a monitoring region (12). A controller (22) actuates modification of lightning condition of the light collector, and identifies an evaluation loop at the presence of objects (26) based on the image data, which depends upon two spectral differential lightning conditions. The controller spectrally modifies the lighting condition when contrast of the image data is evaluated as a reliable object recognition in a mismanage manner. An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting an object in a monitoring region.
