PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus enabling stable adjustment of image density while suppressing increase in size and cost of the apparatus. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus for recording and printing a toner image formed on an image carrier 2 comprises an optical path shielding member 17 capable of performing opening and closing operation to block a light receiving optical path of an optical sensor 16 disposed above an intermediate transfer body 7 at an optional time; and an optical path shielding member opening and closing operation means 18 which moves the shielding member 17 between an open position and a close position, in which output of the optical sensor 16 is detected, and state check is performed according to the detection result for whether the opening and closing operation of the shielding member 17 is normal or not.
