PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid state imaging device which can read out charges generated in a photosensitive region at a high rate without complicating image processing. SOLUTION: A solid state imaging device 1 includes a plurality of photoelectric conversion sections 3, and first and second shift registers 9 and 13. Each photoelectric conversion section 3 has a substantially rectangular photosensitive region 15 having a planar shape defined by two long sides and two short sides and generating charges according to the entering of light, and a region 17 for forming a potential gradient which is raised for the photosensitive region 15 in a predetermined direction parallel with the long sides defining the planar shape of the photosensitive region 15. The plurality of photoelectric conversion sections 3 are juxtaposed in a direction intersecting the predetermined direction. The first and second shift registers 9 and 13 acquire charges transferred from the plurality of photoelectric conversion sections 3, respectively, and transfer the charges in the direction intersecting the predetermined direction.
