PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ultrasonic flaw detecting method specifying a position or a height of flaw of a test specimen, and also to provide an ultrasonic flaw detector. SOLUTION: In the ultrasonic flaw detector, a pair of transmission-reception probes are installed opposite each other so as to straddle the test specimen, an ultrasonic signal is received in a longitudinal wave, a transversal wave, or the combination of the waves at every propagation route through the test specimen, and the presence/absence of the flaw or its height in the test specimen, or the residual thickness of the test specimen excepting the flaw, is measured on the basis of the signal intensity in the route of the received ultrasonic signal.
