<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that printing is conducted on a surface which is already printed, in the case that a user sets a medium which is printed on one surface in a medium storing cassette without taking care of the surface to be printed. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus comprises a first medium storing part 101 which stores a reusable medium P1 which is already printed; a second medium storing part 102 which stores an unused medium P2; sensors 110 and 111 to detect the existence or non-existence of an image on both sides of the reusable medium P1 stored in the medium storing part 101; and a determination section 205 to determine the permission or non-permission of printing in accordance with the detection result by the sensors. When printing information is received from an upper apparatus, the existence or non-existence of an image on both sides of the reusable medium P1 is detected by the sensors, and it is determined by the determination section 205 in accordance with the detection result whether printing on the reusable medium P1 is permitted or not, and then image forming is conducted on the reusable medium P1.
