<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve air-fuel ratio controllability and drivability in transition with a relatively simple constitution, in a system for performing torque control for controlling the crankshaft torque of an internal combustion engine according to request torque by using a torque control physical model. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A highly responsive air flowmeter on which a response delay time (a time constant) becomes a torque control processing period or shorter is used as an air flowmeter 14. Even in transition when a throttle passing air quantity changes, the torque control is performed by compensating for a modeling error in the torque control physical model by using the throttle passing air quantity detected by the air flowmeter 14 similarly to a steady time. Thus, the control accuracy of the torque control in transition can be improved, and the air-fuel ratio controllability and the drivability in transition can be improved by the relatively simple constitution of only the air flowmeter 14.
