A periphery monitoring device provided with a monitor for displaying the periphery of a vehicle. The device is provided with an image information acquisition part which acquires image information captured by an imaging device mounted to the vehicle, an image recognition part which performs image recognition processing of a target feature contained in the image information with a linear shape existing on a lateral side of the vehicle as the target feature, a screen switch judgment part which when the vehicle approaches the target feature, judges whether to switch a monitor-displayed image to a side image relating to the lateral side of the vehicle, and an image switching part which switches the monitor-displayed image to the side image according to the result of judgment by the screen switch judgment part.
