A light output device (1) comprising: a first segment (2d) controllable to have a first luminance; a second segment (2e) adjacent to the first segmentandcontrollable to have a second luminance higher than the first luminance; and a border region (3)locatedat an interface between the first (2d) and second (2e) segmentsandcomprising a first segment portion (31) and a second segment portion (32), wherein the first (2d) and second (2e) 5 segments are configured such that the border region (3) has a luminance higher than the first luminance and lower than the second luminance when the first segment (2d) has the first luminance and the second segment (2e) has the second luminance. The border region makes the luminance transition between adjacent segments of different luminance levels less abrupt. The contrast between such adjacent segments as 10 perceived by a user is reducedthereby. Thus, it may be prevented that a clear line is visible at the interface between the segments even though the difference in luminance is substantial.
