<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To alleviate the complication of storage and management for external devices to be connected for monitoring and adjustment of internal status of a measuring instrument, as well as to adjust the measuring instrument with built-in special functions without fail. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A measuring instrument 1A has a device-specific identification code, which is sent to an external device 2 when the external device 2 is connected via a communication line 4. The external device 2 has a table 231 in which the identification code is made to correspond to the screen configuration information. A reference control section 21 obtains the screen configuration information corresponding to a given identification code by referring to the table 231. A display control section 22 configures the screen on the basis of screen layouts, display items and the like that are specified by the screen configuration information for the screen display on a display section 24.
