<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording material surface image pickup device with improved judging accuracy in the recording material surface image pickup device judging the type of recording material by picking up an image of a surface of the recording material by an image sensor and detecting the surface smoothness and to provide an image forming apparatus provided with the same. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The recording material surface image pickup device is provided with: a radiating LED 42 for radiating light on the surface of the recording material P; an imaging lens 44S for imaging reflected light from the recording material P; a CMOS area sensor 43A for outputting a picture voltage signal according to the amount of light obtained by picking up the reflected light which is imaged by the imaging lens 44S; and a drive and operation section 40c for converting the outputted picture voltage signal from the CMOS area sensor 43A to digital signals. In this case, the image of the recording material is picked up while being held in a stance curved to separate from the radiating LED 42 in the vicinity of the picked-up section on the recording material P.
