PLASMA DISPLAY DEVICE AND METHOD FOR DRIVING PLASMA DISPLAY PANEL

Image display quality is improved by causing a discharge cell of a plasma display panel to emit light at an appropriate luminance corresponding to an image signal.  A plasma display device is provided with a plasma display panel provided with plural discharge cells each comprising a display electrode pair composed of a scanning electrode and a sustaining electrode, and an image signal processing circuit (41) for converting an image signal into image data indicating light emission/non-light emission of each subfield of the discharge cell in order to cause the discharge cell to emit light at a brightness corresponding to the gradation value of the image signal.  The image signal processing circuit (41) comprises a partial illumination rate calculation unit (58) for calculating the proportion of the number of discharge cells to be illuminated to the number of all discharge cells formed on one display electrode pair, as a partial illumination rate, with respect to each display electrode pair and with respect to each subfield, and changes the image data according to the magnitude of the partial illumination rate outputted from the partial illumination rate calculation unit (58).
