Two auxiliary support members (22) are operatively engaged with a building drum (10), in axially approached relationship with respective halves (10a) of the drum itself, each auxiliary member having a circumferential rest surface (22a) extending in the continuation of an outer circumferential surface of the building drum (10) itself. Applied around the outer circumferential surface (14) of the building drum (10) is at least one carcass ply (3) having axially opposite end flaps (3a) each lying on the circumferential rest surface (22a) of the respective auxiliary support member (22). A pair of auxiliary shaping members (31) engaged with the building drum (10) in place of the auxiliary support members, each act against a circumferential abutment edge (32) carried by the building drum (10), to enable the carcass ply (3) to be shaped into a toroidal configuration concurrently with mutual approaching of the halves (10a) of the building drum (10). |
