PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine capable of properly burning a fuel/air mixture according to an operating condition, and restraining fuel from being adhered to a piston, compatibly. SOLUTION: This internal combustion engine comprises a combustion chamber 18 capable of burning an air/fuel mixture at homogeneous combustion or stratified charge combustion, an intake port 19 communicated with the combustion chamber 18 and capable of taking air, fuel injection means 41 capable of reciprocating a cylinder bore 13 by combustion of the fuel/air mixture, and injection period setting means 51 for setting a split injection period of the fuel with the fuel injection means 41 to be overlapped with a piston high-speed period, in which a moving speed of the piston 14 is a preset predetermined speed or above.
