The controller (10) has an operating signal generator (14) for generating an operating control signal for an electric motor (12). A sound signal generator (16) is provided for generating a sound control signal. A mixer (18) is connected to the operating signal generator and to the sound signal generator. The mixer is provided for superimposing the sound control signal on the operating control signal, in order to obtain a control signal for controlling the electric motor. The mixer is integrated in a frequency converter (20), which receives the control signal from the mixer.
