Apparatus 10 for hanging a picture frame, mirror or similar comprises an extendible, elongate pole structure 11, 14, 15, 18 with abutments 12, 16 for securing the pole structure between a floor and a ceiling; and means for hanging a picture frame or the like to the elongate member. The pole structure has an offset portion 11 which ideally affects the centre of gravity of the pole structure, and, when a picture is mounted, reduces the force needed to hold the pole structure in place. The components of the pole structure may have a threaded, co-axial relationship. A ratchet mechanism 16 may be used to ensure control of the torque between the threaded components The device allows a picture or similar display to be hung without securing it to a wall, for example in circumstances where securing to walls is not permitted or not possible.
