<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image compression method for reducing a bandwidth required for a digital video encoder. <P>SOLUTION: An adaptive digital image processor 22 precedes an MPEG2 encoder according to the present method. The image processor 22 receives a high definition (resolution of 1,920×1,080 per image) video signal for broadcast or storage, and adaptively filters the signal by a low pass filter. A low-pass two-dimensional filter 223 processes the video signal, so as to eliminate an artifact caused by encoding and a noise related thereto. Next, the video signal is down-sampled 226 in the horizontal direction, so that a hybrid signal of a relatively low resolution (1,280×1,080 pixels per image) is generated. A receiver unit decodes the hybrid signal, so as to restore it. By use of existing hardware and modified software, the hybrid signal is up-sampled to its original resolution. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT |
