PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating liquid giving a polarizing film having a high dichroic ratio, and to provide its polarizing film, regarding a polarizing film obtained by casting a coating liquid which shows a liquid crystal phase in a specific concentration range of a lyotropic liquid crystal compound, which has heretofore been known. SOLUTION: The coating liquid giving the polarizing film having a high dichroic ratio is obtained by mixing a polyvinyl alcohol having a high degree of saponification in a liquid-crystalline coating liquid comprising a lyotropic liquid crystal compound. This phenomenon takes place when the polyvinyl alcohol infiltrates into the gaps of the associates of the lyotropic liquid crystal compound present in a plural number in the coating liquid and forms the hydrogen bonds with the associates.
