PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a printing possible width in a short time without providing an additional part and to prevent the occurrence of collision noise of the collision of a printing head, etc. with a printer end part, in a printer automatically detecting the printing possible width of the printer. SOLUTION: A printing-width detecting method of the printer includes: a step (S08) for moving the printing head up to one end part being a reference from an initial position and determining as a wide width type when the moving distance is larger than the printing possible width of a narrow width type; and steps (S14 and S21) in which, when the moving distance is smaller than the printing possible width of the narrow width type, the printing head is moved toward the other end part side by a width detecting distance obtained by adding a predetermined distance to the printing possible width of the narrow width type, so as to obtain a slow speed before moving by the printing possible width of the narrow width type, and then the printing head is moved up to one end part being the reference, to determine as the wide width type when the moving distance is the width detecting distance, and to determine as the narrow width type when the moving distance is shorter than the width detecting distance.
