<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic control unit capable of determining whether to rewrite vehicle identifying information or to stop rewriting the information based on peculiar information of a vehicle stored by electronic control units mounted on the vehicle. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When an engine ECU 10 receives a command for rewriting VIN, and if an immobilizer ID stored by the engine ECU 10 is not identical to an immobilizer ID obtained from an immobilizer ECU 60 which is mounted on the same vehicle 100 on which the engine ECU 10 is mounted, it determines that the engine ECU 10 is displaced to another vehicle, rewrites the VIN based on the command for rewriting the VIN, and deletes emission-related failure information. Meanwhile, when the engine ECU 10 receives the command for rewriting the VIN, and if the immobilizer ID stored by the engine ECU 10 is identical to the immobilizer ID obtained from the immobilizer ECU 60, it stops rewriting of the VIN, and also stops deleting the emission-related failure information.
